On Sunday the 14th July, 11 members of the team supported the annual Manchester to Blackpool Cycle Ride 2024 organised by our great friends at Bike Events This was their 38th year of organising the ride and I think we have been involved with it for the past 12 years or so. We were involved in the planning stage and did a recce drive of the course a couple of weeks ago, checking for last minute road works and diversions etc....Our member Baz left the start line at Salford Quays at 7am some 30 minutes before the riders, checking the signage, making sure that the static marshals were in their correct locations etc, then on arrival at the finish area in Blackpool established the Command & Control to liase with the Safety Bike Marshals and the members of Community 4x4 Response who provided the recovery service for broken down cycles (one poor rider experienced no fewer that FOUR punctures in the first half hour ! How unlucky was that ?) The event went very well with hundreds of riders enjoying the 60+ miles of great countryside and at the same time raising loads of money and awareness for local charities such as The Christie etc. Unfortunately there was a couple minor accidents with one gentleman taken to hospital by ambulance....It is understood that his injuries were not serious and we wish him a speedy recovery, our marshals team secured his cycle for him. The last riders reached the finish line by about 5:30 so we all got home well in time for a certain football match.....shame about the result !
We look forward to the 39th event in 2025 !
